1. Hat Man of 44th regiment 1758

This British soldier of the 44th Regiment of foot, an Essex regiment, is equipped as he would have been fighting in the French Indian wars in North America.

This period is also known as the "Lace Wars" to military uniform enthusiasts, as it was the peak of the use of flamboyant decorations on even the humblest soldier's uniform. The lace in question is the decorated white tape around button holes and on edges which has a colour combination unique to each regiment.

This was the my first painting in the "Front to Back" series.
