Rifleman, Crimean War 1854
At the time of the Crimean War, Riflemen were still wearing their distinctive green uniforms, distingishing them from their red-coated heavy infantry counterparts.
Entering the war with the Minie rifle the Rifle Brigade soon adopted the long Enfield rifle. The 1st and 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade took part in the Crimean war.
The British Army was notoriously badly-equipped and poorly supplied. They were unprepared for the harsh conditions of the Crimea. The Rifleman pictured is in fighting kit.
